Hospital de Sant Pau: A photo story of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Barcelona

Hospital de Sant Pau in the El Guinardó neighbourhood of Barcelona is most likely going to be the most beautiful hospital that you'll ever visit in life! This was on my list of places to see in the city for a long time, but I ended up visiting this place just by chance - however, that's a story for another post!

This was the chamber for the patients

Now, the oldest buildings dated back to the 15th century, but what we see now was built in the early 20th Century by Catalan modernist architect Lluís Domènech I Montaner. The building won numerous awards including the St. George's Cross by the Generalitat de Catalunya. It also won the award by the Barcelona City Council in 1913 for its annual architectural competition.

Without much ado, enjoy the gorgeous Hospital de Sant Pau of Barcelona!

  2. This is probably the most beautiful hospital I've ever seen, through your photos of course as I have never been to Spain. It's incredible to think that this building was not commissioned as a religious or administrative venue -- typically two functions which justified the construction of grand buildings throughout history.

    1. Yes you are right, but the structure you see is relatively new...by then architecture was already a much celebrated field and homes and mansions were built in grand styles. A hospital was still a bit of anomaly I guess...
