Cianjur - top places to explore in and around the city!
Located in the West Java district of Indonesia, Cianjur is famous for it's fine rice, mountain passes, terrace gardens and more. I haven't been there yet, but it's certainly a dream to visit Indonesia and explore small little places like Cianjur which are truly filled with natural beauty. There is much to be explored, but in my opinion what's truly the most interesting aspect of the region is that it's also home to Southeast Asia's largest megalithic site - Gunung Padang! Located at a distance of about 50 km from Cianjur, the site is believed to be more than 5000 years old.
But what exactly is a megalithic site?
A megalith is a basically a large piece of stone and when it's organised into a man-made pattern, it's often known as a megalithic. Some of the most famous megalithic sites include Stonehenge in United Kingdom, Harhoog in Germany and Dolmen of Monte Bubbonia in Italy.
1. Puncak Tea Plantation
It's a popular mountain pass which connects the cities of Bogor and Bandung. The area is famous for its beautiful tea gardens and swiss style chalets which were built after the second world war. Now the area is a popular destination for holiday makers and there are many resorts within the plantation itself which allow visitors to explore them from close quarters.
2. Cibodas Botanical Gardens
Located on the slope of Mount Gede, the gardens are spread over 210 acres and were founded in 1852 by the Dutch. There are more than ten thousand varieties of living specimens in the garden many of which were brought to Java from outside.
3. Taman Safari Indonesia
Over an area of 420 acres, there are more than 2500 wild animals which are housed in this park. Some of the most popular animals include Bengal tiger, Komodo dragons, elephants, cheetahs and more. I am not a huge fan of safaris which bring man and animals so close to each other, including petting so would suggest that we skip this and focus more on exploring the natural parts of the region.
4. Cipanas Presidential Palace
This is one of the six presidential palaces of Indonesia and it was erected in the year 1740 by the Dutch. Spread over an area of 26 acres, the palace was originally constructed as a resort for the ruling Dutch and then later grew in size and developed into a palace.
The resort is a perfect place for those who are looking for a quiet and relaxed holiday close to the nature. Read more about Puncak Pass resort from Traveloka.
