Breakfast with peacocks at Khaba Fort, near Jaisalmer

When in Jaisalmer, you can spend a morning eating Breakfast with the Peacocks in an old and ruined fort in the That desert. The experience is nothing short of exquisite, though there is a little bit of rustic feel to it as well. Read on to know how you can also enjoy this sumptuous meal :)

Khaba Fort

Khaba is a village close to Jaisalmer, more than half of which is completely deserted. The grazing cattle and peacocks lead you to the Khabha fort which has recently been renovated.

The ancient fort in the Khaba village takes you to the depths to the rich history of the village. The fort houses the geological museum which exhibits fossils. The ruins are about 250 years old and absolutely astonishing. (Ref: Rajasthan Government)

Breakfast at Khaba Fort

I woke up to the sound of my phone alarm at 4.45am. For a second I was disoriented as my mind said I was on a vacation, while my phone kept telling me to wake up before five! And my heart said - its just not fair. This is when I got another call from the reception telling me it was 5am and we would be leaving at 5.30 for breakfast :) Seriously!!!

Mind you it was no regular breakfast - it was a breakfast to be had on a historical, and abandoned, fort at the crack of dawn with hundreds of peacocks and peahens coming there for their morning grains feeding session with a local village boy.

Sunrise happens at 6.10 am at this time of the year and we were there by six. The day was cloudy (monsoon time) and by the time we saw the sun it was already up and grinning! But the light was absolutely wonderful. We gorged on some really good almond and chocolate cakes with tea, along with sandwiches and some more tea :) The peacocks didn't come in as large a number as was originally expected (unusually they come in hundreds), but none of us had ever seen such a large group of our national bird ever in life before and so our day was already made :)

And of course, the light was good for some nice photography - I ended up taking candid portrait shots for all :) I am not much of a food photographer, but nevertheless ended up experimenting a little here.

Enjoy!

Suryagarh offers the very interesting opportunity for its guests. Do make it a point to ask for it if you stay there. I recommend it highly!

How to reach Khaba Fort?

For those not staying there, here is a map of Khaba Fort. Its a very nice drive from Jaisalmer with little or no traffic. Sign boards are minimal so make sure you ask the locals, or use the map below. You may need permission for eating at the fort as its an ASI maintained fort.
