Review: German Bakery (Deutsch Bäckerei), Koregaon Park

German Bakery Koregaon Park Pune food carrot cake review service
The very delicious carrot cake!
German Bakery located in Koregaon Park is one of Pune's most famous and popular eateries. Below is my review from a recent visit.

A little bit of past

Located in the hot and happening Koregaon Park, German Bakery was always a popular hangout cafe for people from all nationalities in Pune. This suddenly changed in February 2010 when it was targeted by a terrorist attack killed which 17 innocents and damaged the bakery beyond repair. It was an attack targeting the foreign nationals, especially those who thronged the Osho ashram right across the street from the cafe.

German Bakery now

After three years of renovation, the Bakery reopened this year. This year the mastermind behind the blast was also sentenced to death by a Pune court - the bakery sort of closed that chapter and started a new one again.

I have been there at the cafe multiple times since it opened and have tried out a number of things - usually coffee, cakes, muffins and so on. So what's my take on it? I think most of the stuff they serve is really good, especially the cakes (even more than coffee). But what I like the most about the place is the ambiance there - its really chilled out and relaxed. You don't just visit the place to eat - you basically go there to hang out with your friends. I think its good for solo visitors as well, especially the weekend breakfast/ brunches. Great also to pack some of those yummy muffins for friends and families, though my personal favorites are perhaps carrot or pound cakes there :)

And if you do not like the coffee there, you can always hop into newly opened 'Starbucks' just across the street. I am yet to visit it, but would soon do that and bring some advice from there as well :)

My Complaint

My only complaint is the often disappointing service at the Bakery. be prepared to be ignored fora long time before anyone attends to you. On my last visit, half an hour after placing the order, the staff came and asked us to order again as they had lost the order somewhere...it was hilarious, yet a little disappointing (especially when I was showing off Pune to my visiting friends from Bangalore)!

Comments

  1. Nicely described. I can understand many cafes don't have good service, but as long as you enjoy the ambiance and pack in some muffins, it's worth a visit.

    1. I completely agree on that Renuka, I usually let go of poor service if the food and ambience is good (as long as the staff is not outrightly rude) :)
