Chennai Masala - 'Poster Art' from Madras
Was in Chennai a while back and couldn't resist taking a few cheesy snaps, uploading a couple of them here. Had planned a detailed and interesting post on 'Poster Art' down south, but do not have enough material for that right now, perhaps after my next visit to this amazing South India city!

This, of course, is my personal favourite, do not miss the two faces on the top left! |

ReplyDeleteWe all like to get titillated...somehow all the images in the first one do that well :)
not just in chennai...any south indian state you go to, the cinema poster has an inevitable place in the landscape...and there is sure to be a hot item on the walls
ReplyDeletehey, you've got a very interesting blog here. And the fact that you are from Gujarat makes it more interesting to me. :)
ReplyDeleteAs you know, i was there at Kutch/Bhuj/Ahmedabad for 4 days and completely loved it. I will be back again for sure and now i know where to find good information.
And thanks for the comments on my blog. will come back and read in leisure. :)
@Jon: Quite true, South is certainly hotter :)
ReplyDelete@Neelima: Thanks a lot :) Glad you enjoyed it, would certainly be of any help the next time you visit Gujarat.
:-)
ReplyDeleteyou should visit more cities in south. postal art out here are very smart.
why dont you call for a caption contest?
I completely agree with you Kochuthresiamma...the visual art is amazing there and I do intend to write a much more detailed article on that soon. I have spent quite some years in South, but visiting the cities there is always welcome :)
ReplyDeleteAnd caption is a superb idea...will do that surely next time. You have any suggestions for these two?
I love poster art in the south. Too bad so much of the hand painted film art is disappearing, but even in the digitally produced ones can be really visually interesting.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely August! Extremely sad that the hand painted one is disappearing...
ReplyDeleteHaha. It's extremely difficult to miss those two faces on the top left. My favorite too. Love the disarray.
ReplyDeleteOn my last Chennai trip I even tried stealing one stuck on the wall, but my friend stopped me! I regret it still...
ReplyDeleteNEVER listen to such friends. :(
ReplyDeleteHaha...and he is from South and was completely scandalized by my antics!
