It was only a chance encounter that I visited this place with a couple of friends, one Marathi and the other Kashmiri, and both my fellow NIDians.
Badshahi Boarding and Lodging is located in the Sadashiv Peth area of Pune and has a seventy year old history of providing good authentic Marathi food and cheap accommodation to the city visitors. The place has an absolutely unassuming air which makes it far more welcoming than most other food joints we come across on the street junctions.
As I already mentioned landing up at Badshahi was pure luck. We were at the
Sawai Gandharva Music Festival enjoying to the mesmerizing vocals by Pandit Jasraj, when Girish called us out and decided to treat us here. Initially completely uninterested (the music was too beautiful to be left mid-way), I reluctantly followed my friends, still highly apprehensive about what to expect. A short walk and a mini-auto ride away, we reached the place, it was late night and difficult to even read the name of the place.

Now to eat food at Badshahi, you need to take a coupon and the helper there writes your name on the black slate and gives you the coupons. At this stage you also need to pay him the money. As soon as the seats are empty, your name is called and you get inside on the pre-decided location and wait for the food! For Rs. 30 you get unlimited food - roti, two vegetables, daal and chaas.

I found the food to be quite average, but was completely bowled over by the ambiance of the place. Its almost as if you are eating in a huge house of an old Marathi relative. The staff is friendly and professional, and like most
thali places, also very prompt.

We were one of the last guests that day (the places doesn't give out coupons after 10 pm), and by the time we left the staff had already started their food. It was nice to be sitting opposite them and eating food, something very unusual in most restaurants. But then Badshahi isn't the usual dinner place; those who eat here love it completely. Girish and his friends travel 5 kilometer everyday evening to eat the dinner here. By the way you can even rent a bed (one room has three beds) for a sum of Rs. 1200 per month! I think we all ended up eating more than the usual dinner that night, and were too full to even walk afterward!

As no sweets are served here, make sure you top up the Marathi food with Pune's very own (and famous)
Mastani at the numerous ice-cream shops in the near-by Vadas. Its a mango ice-cream with more than the usual mango liquid around it. It would taste even more fantastic in the summers. The ice-cream gets its names from the famous love story of
Bajirao-Mastani!
p.s. the pictures are all from my phone, and the quality not exactly great.
Hi Siddhartha! It doesn't look a terrific experience... Anyhow, it seems that people were happy at the end... ;))
ReplyDeleteBlogtrotter Two has started to cruise the Nile for you, but without Poirot... ;) Enjoy and have a great week!

ReplyDeleteI love pieces like this, "discovering" little nooks from different places. And I enjoyed what you wrote. Ive never been to Pune but I hope to get there one day. I have an on-going "love affair" with India haha. I keep complaining about experiences but I couldn't help coming back. Fact is, i'll be there again for the 3rd time this March.

ReplyDeletethe food was decent, though not necessarily great for me.
ReplyDeletegiven a choice i would have skipped dinner that night, but for my insistent (and possibly hungry) friends :)
Not bad of a place if you happen to be there and want to eat a meal on budget. What was in that 'lota'? chhaas?
ReplyDeleteAnd you are like me. Clicking photos of everything. :-) But then the photos give the reader the whole story.
Nisha - Le Monde-A Poetic Travail
@nisha: the 'lota' was for water, there was chhaas too, but in another glass!
ReplyDeletei agree with you on pictures giving a much clearer picture to the reader, though sometimes clicking too many pictures becomes an irritant for my fellow traveler :)
Love thali. And no sweets? That would be disappointing. I work with someone from Pune and I'll be sure to ask her where to go for the nice desserts.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and leaving your comment. I'll see you again tomorrow!
@Joy: Sadly no sweets, even I was really looking forward to some sweets! And I shall look forward to your suggestion :)

Wish you all the best :)
Thanks for reviving nostalgic memories of one of my favourite eateries. I remember eating at Badshahi Boarding way back from my childhood days in the 1960s and 1970s when I lived on Tilak Road Pune. I pass by often. Some things like Badshahi never change, as if they are frozen in time. Your blog tempts me to visit soon. Keep Blogging such wonderful pieces. Happy Eating. Vikram
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Vikram, reading it now made my day :) Gives me immense pleasure to see that I could help someone relive their memories, especially from such a long time back...I would love to hear more about the place and Pune in general :)
DeleteThanks for posting these photos,
ReplyDeleteI have had really good memories here!!
It means a lot when you are abroad and when you get to see such things!!!!
Thanks
I am glad the post you gave you a flavor of food back home :)
DeleteThis place is a landmark. In 1996, I used to eat here almost every alternate day. THis place used to be just so beatiful in its soul. There were two old men who would give the coupons and manage the place, I am not sure whether they are arund. They were so nice- strict about everything. When they realized that we had come from 2500 kms away to eat here, they would treat us with love. The most important thing about this place was the chass that they would serve.
ReplyDeleteI agree the place has a beautiful soul...it was super fun just being there :) Now that I have moved to Pune, I should visit the place again....
DeleteIts still there, I have been having food there whenever I visit the city.
