Indroda Nature Park is located in the capital city of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. Spread over an area of 400 hectares, the park is actually split into two parts by river Sabarmati - the western part is known as
Indroda Nature Park and the eastern part is known as
Wilderness Park.
Opening hours: 8am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday (Monday holiday)

If you live in Ahmedabad drive down in your car, or even better on your bikes. Its a great highway and if the weather is good, the ride is extremely pleasurable. I made this trip with a couple of more friends last year (Bhavin and Amruta), just in time to experiment with my camera before the Italy trip.
We started early in the morning and it took about an hour to reach the Park. It is extremely easy to locate, ask anyone on the road just before you enter Gandhinagar and they will be able to guide you. Its on the main road itself and well marked on the road as well.

We had made this trip because we were running out of places to see over the weekends and I was not so keen on biking over long distances. There were zero expectations with the place (I had visited it years ago with Nirma friends, but only briefly) and the only idea was to spend a day close to nature and do some photography. Amruta being the no-fuss-girl for Sunday trips also gladly agreed.

I still believe that the Park is a great place for kids, but even adults can enjoy walking on the solitary road with trees all around. Its a huge park and walking is the best part there, follow one of the numerous trails and just enjoy the jungle sounds. I visited the place in Summers, but I think it would be wise to see it in the winters. Carry some food though, possibly even chai. There is only one tiny restaurant inside and when we visited, it was closed.

So these are some of the things that you can do:
- Visit the Dinosaurs Park, especially if you have kids with you. It has life size replicas and real fossilised Dino eggs on display (these have been found in Gujarat).

- The Cactus park is great, loads of variety with many rare ones flowering when we visited

- If you have time, visit the other side of Park across the Sabarmati (famed for its antelopes)
- Carry some edibles, and have a mini-picnic. Make sure you carry back all your garbage.
- Click each-others pictures when there is nothing else to do!

- Look at some of the caged animals, the eagle (or was it a kite) and tiger are note-worthy

- Chase women in sarees, the local women are pretty and love riding cycles early in the morning (please do not follow all the advice I give)!

The day ended while it was still late morning; we had chai on the way back in Gandhinagar followed by a sad lunch at Bikanerwala.

ReplyDeletePeople need to stop and realize that our kids are just not learning from us, we also are learning from them. To me it is so worth the expense.
Gandhinagar has a good number of beautiful gardens and park. A few years ago, I have visited Indroda Nature Park, it's a good place to spend quality time.
