Nainital - discovering Joshi Villa

Weird that the first post on my home town is about my home, but then its one place I love to be in everything time I think about Nainital. My association with the house has grown over the years, in the beginning it was just a holiday home for my sister and me. It was only later that I realised that we were a part of the house, of the heritage and all the history associated with the place.

The bridge connecting the main house with the out-house, I used to be scared of this part as a kid...
The old old old orange wall...
The locked rooms, this is where we often stay when we visit home now...

There is very little that I know about the place, but I hope to discover it more and more as I write this series of posts on the house. I have some people in the list who know a lot about the house, some who even grew up in it. My grandmother and her twin sister were the first generation kids and were born in the house. Wish one of them was still around to share the growing up stories and how different things were back then.

A peek into the living room
That's me, unfortunately I don't have a picture of the room without me...this is quite an old picture though!
That's my uncle putting up the light for Diwali, we decorated the home together that Diwali!

My grand mother's father (Rai sahib) had a son from his first marriage, and the dadi-twins from second. I have no clue who the son is and where he is, currently there are tenants in his section of the house and a dog which especially dislikes me. It would be interesting to follow his trail as well, I wonder why no one in the family is interested in him or to what happened to his future generations. I wonder why I find all this so interesting.

The window as one walks up the second floor...
The steps in the evening, small foot painted to invite Lakshmi during Diwali

p.s. I am using some images from my earlier visits to Nainital, would continue doing this to illustrate the posts

  3. Awesome ! It has brought me some lovely & pleasant memories of a few years back.Last year I was there on 31st & it had snowed near Pangot!! We used to visit & stay often in Nainital, my wife & me !! Had left my hospitality job in Dubai & joined her to work with the school her father founded on the Aryapatta Hill.

Have some beautiful & some bitter memories, the drive up & the walk down Kilbury Hill, Awesome ! The love of the hills has sunken deep in my heart. It's almost a year now......

BTW Siddharth, do you have homestay arrangement @ Joshi Villa, would definitely love to visit in December !!

  4. @IrfanSherazi: What a fantastic comment man! I am so glad that you had a fantastic time in the hills...and it must be blissful to stay there on a long extended vacation :)

Unfortunately there is no home-stay at Joshi Villa. I think my uncle once did give the place to a Honeymooning Punjabi couple way back in seventies when they were stuck without any hotel accommodation...but nothing since then.
