Celebrating Easter at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, New Delhi

At the cross,
At the cross,
I surrender my life.
I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You.
Where Your love ran red,
and my sin washed white.
I owe all to You, I owe all to You Jesus.

It was the evening of Easter and very close to the end of a beautiful day we had spent touring across Delhi when we almost stumbled across the gorgeous Cathedral Church of Redemption in New Delhi. Pulled by the beautiful sound filtering through a half open door, we slowly walked in to the church, not sure what to expect. What we found was pure joy - beautiful music and many smiling faces together were celebrating the resurrection of Christ on this very day more than two thousand years ago.

As we sat down and joined in the prayers, someone tapped on our shoulders and gave two pages of paper with prayers printed on them. I was happy to join in the chorus though I was even happier that my actual voice was easily drowned in the beautiful voices all around.

The church itself is much younger though. It was primarily built to accommodate the growing spiritual needs to British officers in the city in early 1900s. Delhi was still not the capital of British India, though a decision to that effect was already taken in 1911. While work was rapidly on to get New Delhi ready for it's inauguration in 1931, the decision was made to build this church as well and the foundation stone laid in 1927. The first donation for it came from none other than King George and Queen Mary, technically the rulers of United India back then.

Architecture of the Church

Built in the semi-Palladian style of architecture, the church quickly gained prominence and became one of the most important in the country. For those who do not know, Palladian is a style of architecture which draws heavily from the Greek and Roman temple architecture and is based on symmetry and perspective. The style traces it's origins to the 16th Century and was rather popular in England and some of it's colonies.
